Chances are, they’ll say something about the impact a school makes on the young people who attend it. Do students feel safe and cared for? Are they being challenged? Do they have opportunities to play and create? Are they happy?

- A good school adapts quickly to social change.
- A good school uses every resource, advantage, gift, and opportunity it has to grow students and tends to see more resources, advantages, gifts, and opportunities than lower-performing schools.
- A good school has students who get along with and support one another towards a common goal–and they know what that goal is.
One thing is sure: High-stakes testing, teacher accountability and standards are not the answer. What is the answer? A good teacher can have a transformative effect on learning - for obvious reasons. However, many myths about teaching and learning persist, despite persistent debunking. Schools have to be culturally responsive, taking into account the cultures of students and teachers before jumping at standardised descriptions of what good teaching is.
