- Palermo. I can only start this list of the top things to do in Sicily with the capital, Palermo. It is a very rich city in terms of historical buildings and monuments and the ideal place to visit if you like churches and palaces.

You sense the Aeolian Islands before you actually see them: two of these seven extraordinarily beautiful spots off the Sicilian coast are very active volcanoes, and their steamy, smoky belching sends plumes far into the air.
