Feb 28, 2017 · A mansion has been on these grounds since before the 15th century as there is a fresh spring (hence the name Schon Brunn or "beautiful spring" in German) but the present building could finally be termed palace when it was added onto by the widow of Ferdinand II, Eleonora Gonzaga, and finished in 1643.
During the summer she spent in the Favorita palace, which, together with Schönbrunn and Laxenburg she received from her godmother the late dowager empress. Under her supervision, was added an extension to the Hofburg , which then suffered a fire and was rebuilt again.

It wasn’t until the next century though that the mansion was replaced with what would be the first palace constructed on the site. It was Empress Eleonora of Gonzaga, who enjoyed hunting as well, who constructed a “ Château de Plaisance ” on the site between 1638 and 1643.
It was Ferdinand II’s wife, Eleonora Gonzaga, who had an aristocratic residence built in 1642; she is said to be responsible for the name Schönbrunn. Another woman, Maria Theresa , was responsible for the extension and transformation of Schönbrunn into the Habsburg summer residence.
