Since 1930, Shedd has expanded twice, with both additions carefully respecting the original architecture that earned the aquarium a National Historic Landmark designation.
The world's largest indoor aquarium opened more than five years later, in December 1929, along Lake Michigan, just south of Grant Park and east of the Field Museum. Additional Shedd exhibit halls were completed in the early years of the Great Depression.
