Sep 17, 2023 · 曹操 Ts‘ao Ts‘ao or 曹公 Ts‘ao Kung, afterwards known as 魏武帝 Wei Wu Ti [A.D. 155–220]. There is hardly any room for doubt that the earliest commentary on Sun Tzŭ actually came from the pen of this extraordinary man, whose biography in the San Kuo Chih reads like a romance.
Thus it came about that Wei Wu was the first to write a commentary on it. As we have already seen, there is no reasonable ground to suppose that Ts'ao Kung tampered with the text.
Ch`ao Kung-wu says that he was impelled to write a new commentary on Sun Tzu because Ts`ao Kung's on the one hand was too obscure and subtle, and that of Tu Mu on the other too long-winded and diffuse.

Wu wei doesn’t really mean non-action, but rather action in accord with Nature. One scholar, Professor Robert Henricks, explains the Tao in the Lao Tzu “does nothing, and yet there is nothing left undone (wu-wei erh wupu wei).” The ideal ruler in the Lao Tzu is someone who rules in this way.
