Dec 13, 2021 · Museumsufer. German for “museum embankment,” Frankfurt’s Museumsufer is a collection of world-class museums lining either side of the Main river. At the center is the historic Städel—one of the leading art museums in Frankfurt, if not Germany, with around 3,100 paintings, 660 sculptures, 100,000 drawings, and 5,000 photographs.
- The view. Frankfurt is a fairly unique city within Europe in geographic terms. Nestled in a shallow valley at the foot of the Taunus mountains and cut in two by the Main river, Frankfurt benefits not just from a pleasant climate (more on that later).
- Accidental mixups. This is often one of the first things that travelers to Frankfurt notice upon arriving. And it usually doesn’t end well for them. “I’m in the wrong city!”
- Steep history. Germany sitting right in the heart of Europe has obviously been the stage for some of the continent’s most significant chapters of history.
- The Old Town. As I mentioned just now, Frankfurt was first settled in what is now known as the Old Town. Visiting it today, you’ll see the quintessence of Central European vintage: those charming half-timbered houses, Protestant churches, and cute public markets that almost seem right out of a fairy tale.

The ancient center of Frankfurt lies at the central square known as the Römerberg, or “Roman hill.”. The Frankfurt city hall, begun in 1405 and known as the Römer, has been rebuilt and restored over the years after being destroyed by Allied bombs during the war. Jun 20, 2022 · Frankfurt’s museum of applied arts is in a mesmerising building by the American architect Richard Meier. In the 1980s he created a bright, airy gallery, inspired by Le Corbusier’s International Style, taking up the grounds of the Neoclassical Villa Metzler and attached to it via a footbridge.
