Feb 14, 2020 · The Prado museum is considered one of the best art museums in the world. It was originally created with a collection of 311 paintings coming from the Spanish Royal collections. At first, King Charles III of Spain wanted to create a Natural sciences museum, and commissioned the architect Juan de Villanueva the design of the Prado’s building.
This explains why the Prado has been described as a museum of painters not of paintings, given that its artists are represented in a superlative manner with, for example, the largest holdings of Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya, some numbering more than 100 works.
