Jun 29, 2017 · In 1941 the grotto was hit by a tornado that went through Grand Rapids. As a result, the tornado actually destroyed portions of the grotto. Eventually, it was rebuilt by a family in Fostoria, Ohio in dedication to their son who died in the tornado.
