The Colt Single Action Army Peacemaker is aptly named. First introduced within the U.S. Army in 1873, it was referred to as the M1873. The nickname “Peacemaker” actually wasn’t coined until 1878. Some different calibers exist with this model historically but the most iconic has to be the .45 long colt, still readily available today.
Its overall appearance has remained consistent since 1873. Colt has cancelled its production twice, but renewed it due to popular demand. The revolver was dubbed the "Peacemaker", and is a famous piece of Americana and the American Wild West era, due to its popularity with ranchers, lawmen, and outlaws alike.

In 1873, Colt’s single-action Army (SAA) revolver became the Army’s standard sidearm. Cavalry troopers were armed with the new revolvers. Lawmen and outlaws alike were quick to adopt the handy new 6-shooter which earned the nickname “Peacemaker.”

Oct 4, 2023 · Possibly the shrewdest SAA option appeared in 1877. 1873 had been an auspicious year for American firearms, with the Colt SAA and the Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle hitting the market almost simultaneously. The wildly popular Winchester was initially chambered for the new .44-40 Winchester cartridge.
The chief difference is that the Colt 1873 had a solid cylinder frame, while the Open Top did not have a top strap over the cylinder like the old 1860 model. The new revolver and cartridge swept the trials and was adopted by the US Cavalry in 1873 — hence the name Colt 1873.
