Chadwick Boseman is world-renowned as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Panther, a powerful superhero dedicated to justice and upholding the legacy of his noble father. But this mesmerizing American actor wants audiences to know there's more to him than rippling muscles, a hard stare, and a regal charisma. With 21 Bridges, Boseman drops the Wakandan accent and flashes an easy smile -- along with a badge -- as a cowboy cop on a mission. Produced by Boseman and Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, this hard-R crime-drama offers a graphic and gritty tale of heroics. Yet its premise has some similarities to T'Challa's origin story.

Directed by Brian Kirk, 21 Bridges begins at a funeral. The voice of a charismatic preacher booms over a quiet congregation. Listening intently as a big tear runs down his baby face is 13-year-old Andre Davis (Christian Isaiah), who grieves his father, the heroic NYPD officer in the closed casket. The preacher speaks of sacrifice, dedication, and being an avenger. Cut to decades later, Andre (Boseman) is grown and an NYPD detective looking to live up to the example his father set. However, Andre's idea of protect and serve has earned him a reputation as a "cop-killer killer." In nine years of service, he's drawn his firearm eight times, killing eight suspects. Andre carries no guilt about these deaths because he lives by a code. He never fires first or without cause. To others, he might seem a trigger-happy madman. But, Andre sees himself as a servant of justice and God. He'll do what he feels is right, whatever it takes.

As Andre, Boseman strides with the confidence of a man on a mission. He speaks frankly and will not suffer fools. Yet 21 Bridges is at its best when Boseman gets to have fun as the smartest guy in the room. One scene where he and Miller quip at the expense of some flummoxed detectives is so delectable it had me instantly wishing for a sequel. As for Miller, she puts on a husky New York accent and makes for a solid scene partner for Boseman. Rounding out the supporting cast, Simmons brings a world-weary gravitas with his rumbling tone and rumpled chin. As the gun-slinging cop-killer, Kitsch barges in with volatile menace, and his onscreen partner-in-crime James matches him in energy. But this striking young actor who awed critics with If Beale Street Could Talk also carries a heavy vulnerability that brings depth to his character's tragic -- but rushed -- backstory. Then, when James finally faces off with Boseman, sparks fly in a battle rich with suspense.

The efforts of the excellent ensemble smoothly compliment director Kirk's vision. The helmer who carved his reputation on episodes of Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and Luther knows how to muster teeth-grit tension. His pacing is smooth and confident, slickly ushering audiences from hipster Brooklyn to the back alleys of Chinatown to the abattoirs and posh hotels of the Meatpacking District. The shots of a city asleep and at risk come alive in high-contrast cinematography that makes streetlights sparkle like stars against pitch-black skyscrapers. Action sequences unfurl with clarity and creativity, offering gruesome hits and alarming exposition amid sprays of bullets. Then the instrumental score from Alex Belcher and Henry Jackman harkens back to the dynamic detective movies of Humphrey Bogart. The music is bold and brooding, as if crying out the emotions these tough guys wouldn't dare voice. But all this is cruelly undermined by a twist that is criminally predictable.

Chadwick Boseman brings a riveting bravado to the role of a modern-day sheriff on a thankless quest. He's hands down the headliner but smartly shares the spotlight with Sienna Miller, J.K. Simmons, and Stephan James. They all bring their A-game, elevating a B-movie premise with pathos and presence. Director Brian Kirk surrounds them in an atmospher...
