Aardenburg is a small city close to the Dutch border with Belgium. It is part of the Sluis Municipality, located in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. Its medieval name was Rodenburgh (Red Castle).

Eede is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located close on the Belgian border about 3 km south of Aardenburg, in the municipality of Sluis. Eede is the closest dutch village to France as the crow flies, only 54 km to Halluin in the french department of Nord. History
The Roman government responded by building several forts along the coast of what is now Zuid-Holland, Zeeland and West-Vlaanderen. Map of the ancient Lower Scheldt area. Aardenburg was one of them. Originally built in wood, renewed in c.190, and situated on the east bank of a small river, the Rudanna, it controlled the route to Maldegem and beyond.
Aardenburg is half-way between Bruges in Belgium and Flushing in the Netherlands. Arriving from the last-mentioned town, I cycled to Aardenburg in about an hour.
