Bazin can arrive at the conclusion that 'the cinema is objectivity in time' (OPI, 14), and secondly that 'the cinema has not yet been invented' ( MTC , 21), a claim that is subtended by the belief that if the ontology of cinema lies in its duplication of the thing itself, then cinema will eventually end up by being indistinguishable from reality.
His call for objective reality, deep focus, and lack of montage are linked to his belief that the interpretation of a film or scene should be left to the spectator. This placed him in opposition to film theory of the 1920s and 1930s, which emphasized how the cinema could manipulate reality.
