May 5, 2019 · Janis/Dorati - This one is played with a small cut in the third movement and the shorter cadenza in the first. When the music began, it was immediately clear that I was listening to one of the great Rach 3's! Janis plays the opening theme with great care and impressive tonal shading. Its tender without being too soft.

Very impressive, especially for Svetlanov's ripe accompaniment. Coupled with a great #1. Wild/Horenstein. This is surely the best set of Rachmaninov concertos (especially the Rhapsody).

Rachmaninoff was an incredibly gifted pianist, one of the best who ever lived, and thus he was the first to perform the concerto himself, in New York in 1909. One of the early performances was conducted by Gustav Mahler. Rachmaninoff left Russia in 1917 on the eve of the Soviet revolution and immigrated to the US.
