Bill Barich was born in Winona, Minnesota, on August 23, 1943 to Russell and Lois Barich. In 1950, Barich moved with his family to Westbury, New York. Barich graduated from Colgate University in 1965 and in February 1966 he joined the Peace Corps as a teacher in Eastern Nigeria (later Biafra).
