  1. Black musicians have roots in country music that date back to the 1950s. Just because we might not know the artists doesn’t mean their talents and legacies don’t exist. From the Pointer Sisters to Rhiannon Giddens, here are 17 Black females in country music.

    • Mickey Guyton. Embarrassingly, only five black female country artists have ever charted in the US and with only 5% of airplay going to black artists, it's a huge imbalance still to overcome.
    • Loren Ryan. Australian singer Loren Ryan broke her own barriers earlier this year, winning the Toyota Starmaker competition in Tamworth. The Gamilaraay woman told Countrytown in an interview just prior to her win that black artists were making their mark across all genres of music.
    • Rissi Palmer. American country singer Rissi Palmer became the first black woman in twenty years to appear on the Billboard Country Charts in 2007. An amazing feat that kicked the door back open for artists to follow, the song Country Girl was a chart success, but unfortunately the album that followed was her last until she re-emerged in 2015 after legal issues with her label.
    • Yola. The UK isn't always the first place people think of when they think of country, but the burgeoning scene over there has brought amazing talent like Yola to the world.

    • Brittney Spencer. Brittney Spencer garnered attention last fall when singer Maren Morris gave her a shoutout at the 2020 Country Music Association Awards.
    • Rissi Palmer. With her 2007 song “Country Girl,” Rissi Palmer became the first Black woman to have a song on the country music Billboard charts since 1987.
    • Chapel Hart. Chapel Hart is made up of sisters Danica Hart and Devynn Hart and cousin Trea Swindle. The New Orleans-based trio grew up in Chapel, Mississippi and started out as a cover band before deciding to write original music.
    • Miko Marks. In March, Miko Marks released “Our Country,” her first album in 13 years. “I recorded two projects that were well-received, but I wasn’t,” she said.
  4. The Grammy nomination made Guyton the first black female artist to be nominated in the country category. In 2020, Guyton became the first black female artist to perform at the Academy of Country Music awards. Capitol then released her third EP titled Bridges (2020).
