The grand opening of the Hotel Lafayette, on June 2, 1904, was a momentous occasion for the City of Buffalo; the New York Times described it as “one of the most perfectly appointed and magnificent hotels in this country.” The hotel’s design became Bethune, Bethune & Fuchs most important project.

Feb 20, 2019 · The hotel changed hands in 2011, and it underwent a 45 million dollar renovation by developer Rocco Termini. It reopened in 2012. It now has 92 apartments (it’s become cool to live downtown again) in addition to 57 hotel rooms, restaurants, banquet facilities, a working brewery, and retail space.
The hotel is the masterpiece of Louise Blanchard Bethune (1856–1913), the first professional woman architect in the United States. The original building was designed by the firm of Bethune, Bethune & Fuchs and built between 1902 and 1911. Additions from 1916–1917 and 1924–1926 were completed by Esenwein and Johnson.
Building Description: The Hotel Lafayette, built in 1904, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The architect, Louise Bethune, was the first woman in the United States to be recognized as a professional architect with the American Institute of Architects. The Hotel Lafayette is her crowning masterpiece.
