Oct 16, 2019 · Wondering if you could ever save enough, take the plunge, and swing one of your own? Thankfully, I meticulously documented every expense during my 3-month trip overseas. Why did I do this?
- Try to pay off as much debt as you can before heading off. Before even setting off, create a plan to pay off as much debt as you can! Student loans, credit card debt, etc.—
- Open a savings account dedicated to your move abroad. As early as you can before you move, open up a savings account that you can contribute to for moving abroad expenses.
- Only take what you can carry. Avoid shipping large items like furniture or vehicles. This is undoubtedly a huge waste of time, effort, and money; this money is better spent on buying these items once you move or not at all.
- Use Wise and Revolut to make payments and get the best exchange rates. Wise, formerly known as TransferWise, is the most popular way to transfer money between your U.S. account and an account abroad.
- Travel in the off-season (aka never around Christmas) Have you heard the term ‘high season’? It’s a real thing! Some places become more expensive during Christmas and New Year’s, during summer (relative to the hemisphere!)
- Find things to do for free when you travel. All over the world, it is possible to find things to do for free. It’s a great way to beat inflation or rising costs, and enjoy activities that cost nothing.
- Walk and take public transit when you travel. We love walking, and we also focus on our daily step count. As our friends Alex and Ryan would say, “Keep moving!”
- Minimize attractions with entrance fees or cover charges. All over the world, there are attractions that cost money. During times of inflation, these types of charges will increase.
