The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist was the first building in Georgia constructed of brick. It features 81 stained glass windows, 16 gargoyles, is 214 feet tall with a roof height of 96 feet, took over 90,000 copper nails and 45,000 slates to construct. The first bishop of Savannah was the Rt. Rev. Francis X. Gartland. The Church of Saint John the Baptist, then the only Catholic church in Savannah, became the Cathedral. Bishop Gartland enlarged the building with an addition measuring 25 by 60 feet, and repaired the hurricane-damaged roof. He rededicated the Cathedral on June 26, 1853.
Additional Details. The Cathedral is wheelchair accessible via an elevator on Harris St. All visitors must follow the directions given by church staff and volunteers. A small donation of $3.00 per adult is appreciated. The Cathedral is an active house of worship. Guided and self-guided tours are not allowed during Masses or other religious events.

Sunday: 8 AM, 10 AM * & 11:30 AM (Nursery available for the 10 am Sunday Mass) Incense is used at 10 AM Mass. We do not have a Latin Mass at the Cathedral. Latin Mass is held every Sunday at 1 PM at Sacred Heart Church 1707 Bull St.
