Mr Charles Herbert Lightoller was born in Chorley, Lancashire, on 30 March 1874. In February 1888, at the age of 13, he began a four-year sea-going apprenticeship, making his first trip aboard the Primrose Hill, a steel-hulled, four-masted barque of 2,500 tons. His next voyage was on the Holt Hill.

Jun 22, 2005 · Charles Herbert Lightoller was born on March 30, 1874, to Frederick James Lightoller and Sarah Jane Widdows Lightoller in Chorley, Lancashire. He was the youngest of five children, and the second son.
Charles Lightoller passed away on December 8, 1952, aged 72. His ashes were scattered in Mortlake Crematorium in Richmond, Surrey. But his legacy lives on: manifesting itself most recently through the character Mr. Dawson in Christopher Nolan’s epic “Dunkirk” (2017).

In this article I will briefly describe his remarkable career at sea from apprentice in a clipper in the 1880s to the rescue of soldiers from Dunkirk in June 1940.
