Feb 23, 2023 · To assess the impact of the K-Pg extinction event, we compiled global species-level fossil occurrence data for elasmobranchs covering a time interval between 93.9 and 56 Ma (most of the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene).
The Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction, 66 Ma, included the demise of non-avian dinosaurs. Intense debate has focused on the relative roles of Deccan volcanism and the Chicxulub asteroid impact as kill mechanisms for this event.
