He was granted the 37,888 acre ranch in 1837. The adobe also served as an important exchange point on California's first official mail route between Monterey and Los Angeles.

The Dana Adobe, located in a quiet corner of southeastern Nipomo, is a well-restored historical house dating from the early 1850s. The docents there were very friendly and knowledgeable, and because there weren't a lot of visitors, were able to spend considerable time chatting about the house and its history.
