[ show] When biopsy samples are collected from your prostate, they are studied by a doctor with special training, called a pathologist. After testing the samples, the pathologist creates a report on what was found. Your doctor can use this report to help manage your care.
Apr 27, 2023 · A prostate biopsy is used to detect prostate cancer. Your doctor may recommend a prostate biopsy if: A PSA test shows levels higher than normal for your age. Your doctor finds lumps or other abnormalities during a digital rectal exam. You've had a previous biopsy with a normal result, but you still have elevated PSA levels.
Types of Samples. When a prostate biopsy is done, the physician takes 10 or more samples from many areas of the prostate gland. These samples are taken using one of two biopsy methods: Transrectal Biopsy (through the rectum): Uses a small ultrasound probe put into the rectum to guide the biopsy needles through the rectal tissue into the prostate.
The sample may be needed for other tests based on what your doctor thinks the disease may be before the biopsy, called a suspected diagnosis. Molecular tests find genes that might be active, changed, or missing. Other gene or protein tests may be needed to identify which treatments will work.
Rectal bleeding. Antibiotics are typically prescribed prior to a prostate biopsy in order to reduce the risk of an infectious complication. Other Tests to Help Confirm Diagnosis. Multiparametric-magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI): This advanced imaging technology may be used to detect, assess and stage prostate tumors.
