Departure Bay is a bay in central Nanaimo, British Columbia, on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The surrounding neighbourhood is also referred to as "Departure Bay" [2] —once a settlement of its own, it was amalgamated into the City of Nanaimo in the 1970s.

The earliest settlers in the Departure Bay, Vancouver Island area were a first nations group known as the Snuneymuxw, and it has been shown that for at least 2000 years the bay has been inhabited by them. The area was first explored by the Spanish from 1770 to about 1790. The area was known as “Stil’ilup”. After it was settled.
