Through stewardship, scholarship, and outreach, the Briscoe Center for American History cultivates historical knowledge and fosters exploration of our nation’s past. As a leading history research center, we collect, preserve, and make available archival evidence that encompasses key themes in Texas and U.S. history.

The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History is an organized research unit and public service component of the University of Texas at Austin named for Dolph Briscoe, the 41st governor of Texas. The center collects and preserves documents and artifacts of key themes in Texas and United States history and makes the items available to researchers.
The center was named after former Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe, whose lifelong dedication to Texas and American history led to his support for institutions that would preserve it and make it available to the public.
Exhibit topics have encompassed Texas and Southern history, news media history, civil rights, women’s history, decorative arts, the entertainment industry, and Texas music. The Briscoe Center offers exhibits of photographs on tour to museums across the country.
As an organized research unit of the University, the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History facilitates, sponsors, and supports teaching, research, and public education in Texas and United States history.
