After additions on the north side (upper deck in 1998 and club-level seating in 1999) increased the stadium's capacity to 43,000, East Carolina completed a 7,000-seat expansion project in the east end zone that pushed the seating availability to 50,000 in time for Ruffin McNeill's Pirate head coaching debut in September, 2010.
The total cost of the stadium was $300,000 which included permanent stands on the south side, a small press box, and a lighting system. Several renovations since then have made Dowdy-Ficklen arguably the nicest non-power 5 college football stadium. Seating on the north side was completed in 1968, which bumped capacity up to 20,000.

Before the 1991 season, $1.6 million was spent on general repairs to the stadium. Originally being known as just Ficklen Stadium, it was renamed Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in 1994, after Ronald and Mary Ellen Dowdy contributed $1 million to the university. In 1998 the upper deck was built on the north side of the stadium boosting the capacity to 40,000.
Dowdy-Ficklen consistently hosts some of the largest crowds outside of Power 5 conference games. The stadium’s record attendance of 51,082 was set September 13, 2014 in a 70-41 rout of UNC Chapel Hill. As of the beginning of the 2017 season, the Pirates have compiled a record of 183-93-1 in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
