It's only about 280 miles from the New Hampshire border to the New Brunswick, Canada, border if you follow the region's principal road, U.S. Route 1 (along with state Route 189 for the final stretch). However, this jagged shoreline is anything but a straight shot.
- Ogunquit. Southern Maine is home to some of the few sand beaches along the Maine coast, which tends to trend rockier as it goes further north. York, Ogunquit, and Kennebunkport are the three most popular beach getaways in Southern Maine – and in this itinerary, we’ll cover the latter two.
- Kennebunkport. Spend the day on Gooch’s Beach. I hope you didn’t have too much beach time yesterday… because it’s time for what is, in my opinion, one of the best beaches in Maine!

- Portland. Spend the morning on Washington Ave. Like its West Coast sister city of the same name, Portland, ME is becoming a hipster-topia. Nowhere else is that more obvious than on Washington Avenue in South Portland!
- a Proper Day in Boston, Massachusets. Today you’ll get the most proper Boston experience possible in a single day. Drive Time: None. Fortunately, Boston is one of America’s “Most Walkable” cities, because it’s one of the worst places to drive, much less park.
- Boston to Portland, Maine (with a spooky Salem stopover) Today you’ll head up the seacoast to Portland, Maine, stopping at the infamous town of Salem.
- Scenic Drive through Maine to Acadia. Head down east along coastal Route 1 to Bar Harbor, stopping for lunch at McLoons Lobster Shack. Drive Time: 2.5-3 hours.
- Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Maine. Today you’ll experience one of America’s most magnificent national parks. Drive time: 0-3 hours, mostly within Acadia National Park.
