Orthodox popularly reject the Roman Catholic doctrine of the “immaculate conception” of Mary. Oftentimes, it gets cited as a doctrinal development within Roman Catholicism that separates them from Orthodox.
Up until recent centuries, the early church’s teaching that Mary remained a virgin for her entire life was unchallenged. The Orthodox hold firm to the teachings passed on to them from the Apostles, in accord with the Scriptures, that Mary was a virgin both before and after the birth of Christ.
From patristic times, Joseph is considered to be a widower who took on the responsibility of young Mary, as chosen to do so by his temple community. The brothers and sisters of the Lord, as mentioned in the New Testament, are consequently considered, in Orthodox tradition, to be Joseph’s children.
