  3. Jan 4, 2012 · Promoted to Double-A Atlanta in 1950, the 18-year-old Mathews led the Crackers to the pennant with 32 homers, 106 RBIs, and a .272 average. He was considered the best hitting prospect in baseball, and even Hall of Famer Ty Cobb marveled at the youngster’s ability.
