  1. Edwin Bidwell Wilson (April 25, 1879 – December 28, 1964) was an American mathematician, statistician, physicist and general polymath. He was the sole protégé of Yale University physicist Josiah Willard Gibbs and was mentor to MIT economist Paul Samuelson.

  8. May 21, 2024 · American mathematician. Wilson obtained his AB from Harvard U in 1899 and his PhD (supervised by Gibbs) from Yale in 1901. He left the Yale faculty in 1907 for MIT where he became in turn Professor of Mathematics (1911) and of Physics (1917). His interests centered on aerodynamics; his modelling of wind gusts led him to statistics.
