The Flickr Commons is a special program that lives on flickr.com. It’s designed to support cultural organizations in sharing their photography collections with the public, and to help them gather new information added by interested Flickr members.
“The Commons on Flickr” launched in 2008 with the Library of Congress (LOC) as its first partner. Since then, the Flickr Commons has grown into a unique collection of historical photography , with over 100 cultural institutions in 24 countries around the world participating.

Nov 7, 2018 · On November 1, 2018, we announced how we’d begin bringing Flickr back to its roots: an active, photo-sharing community. This meant upgrading our Pro accounts and changing Free accounts to encourage photographers to use Flickr again for interaction and inspiration and not just for backup storage.
Under Flickr Commons, cultural institutions that have reasonably concluded a photograph is free of copyright restrictions are invited to share such photograph under “no known copyright restrictions.”
Since January 2008, the Flickr Commons has been a place for cultural heritage organizations to share their unique historical photography collections with a global community of people interested in visual culture, and see how Flickr volunteer researchers can add knowledge and new descriptions to them.
We’re pleased to share with you a first look at our new Commons Explorer, available at commons.flickr.org. We’ve built the explorer using the standard Flickr API, and have created a secondary database which is updated pretty regularly.
The Flickr Commons was launched on January 16, 2008 with The Library of Congress as its first member. Since then, it has grown to a cohort of 100 international cultural heritage organizations from the very large to the very small.
