Phoebe Spengler (also known as Pheebs) is the daughter of Callie, sister of Trevor, and granddaughter of Egon Spengler. She later became part of the new team of Ghostbusters in New York.

    Before Ghostbusters: Afterlife

In 2009, Callie had a second child, a daughter named Phoebe. Phoebe's biological father could not make a connection with her and left at some point before or when she turned 12. Callie, Trevor, and Phoebe lived in an apartment at the Anderson East Estates on Barneson Street in Chicago.[Note 1]

    Ghostbusters: Afterlife

One morning in the summer of 2021, Phoebe removed an electrical outlet in a room, made a big hole, and tied in the neighbor's electricity and brought theirs up to 220. A noticeable hum got Callie's attention and she came to investigate what was going on. The bright light of Phoebe's head lamp blinded Callie. She turned away with her hands out and told her turn it off. Phoebe declared she could run her lath. Callie asked her why she did not think to ask her. Phoebe pointed out her ineptitude for science. Callie noticed her hair drier on a pile. Phoebe brought up she was better at other things like quesadillas. Callie thanked her for the reassurance. Callie answered the door and learned from the landlord they were evicted. Callie initially mislead Trevor and Phoebe and told them their trip to Summerville was only going to take a week. At one point in the drive from Chicago to Summerville, there was car trouble. Callie and Phoebe sat on their Subaru's roof while Trevor fixed something under the hood then they continued on. Further into the journey, Trevor walked out of a motel. He was about about to shut the rear hatch of the car. Phoebe stood up and got out of the way. Phoebe looked around as Callie drove through Summerville. Callie proclaimed it was where their grandfather lived. Phoebe added it was where he died, too. Trevor was annoyed his phone was not catching even a bar. Callie stated there better be a bar. Phoebe scoffed at her word play. Upon arriving at the Farmhouse, Phoebe shielded her eyes from the Sun with her hand and looked up at the many satellites on the roof. Callie tried to open the front door but it was locked. She lifted up the mat and looked in vain for a key. She asked Phoebe to break in. Callie tried to look through a window while Phoebe picked the lock. Callie was dismayed at the sorry state of the interior. Phoebe noticed a sequence of numbers scratched on the boards near the ceiling in the study then she examined a small statue of Zuul she found. An earthquake prompted them to take cover under the dining table. Trevor joked, "Remember that summer we died under a table?" Callie was annoyed the house was on a fault line. Phoebe speculated it was frakking. Callie found it frakking annoying. The earthquake stopped. Trevor took solace in the fact they would only be in town for a week. Callie came clean they were living in Summerville permanently. Phoebe noticed a P.K.E. Meter under the ripped up armchair. She went over and grabbed it. Trevor recalled Callie said she had money saved up. Callie confirmed she did before she had children. Phoebe pointed out she was never good with money. Callie thanked her for the support. Trevor noticed Phoebe had something but she did not know what it was either. Trevor grabbed at the top of the meter but Phoebe pulled it out his grasp. They met Janine Melnitz, the woman who notified Callie of her father's death. That evening, they went to Spinners Roller Hop for dinner. Callie told Phoebe she might make a friend in Summerville. Phoebe jokingly asked what she would make them out of. Callie implored her to keep an open mind about their new home being an opportunity to start fresh. Phoebe read a book on her bed. Behind her on the night stand, the P.K.E. Meter activated but she never noticed. A chess board and the pieces suddenly fell onto the floor. She sat up and looked to see what fell. Phoebe placed the board and pieces on the night stand next to her bed. She lied down on her side facing the chess board and fell asleep. Phoebe woke up the next morning and noticed a white pawn had been moved. Callie yelled they were leaving for school in 15 minutes. Phoebe moved a black knight forward. On the drive into town, Phoebe played with a Rubik's cube in the back seat. Callie advised her not be afraid to start a conversation. Trevor reacted in disagreement. He thought that was horrible advice and she was literally setting her up for failure. To prove his point, Trevor asked Phoebe how her were jokes coming along. Phoebe told them one: "Why should you never trust atoms? Because they make up everything." Trevor turned back to Callie. She claimed it was funny. Trevor declared it was not and asked to be dropped off across the street from Spinners. Callie walked Phoebe to Summerville Middle School but noticed something was wrong and inquired. Phoebe clarified she loved learning, not school and summer school was a state sponsored work camp for delinquents. Callie offered her an alternative: help scrape asbestos out of the attic. Phoebe decided to take her chances with public education. Callie took her sunglasses off, stopped at the entrance, and advised Phoebe not to be yourself. Gary Grooberson wheeled in an old cathode tube television into the classroom and greeted his students. He introduced himself as "Mr. Grooberson" and admitted off the bat that he did not want to be in school as much they did not. He revealed he discovered a VHS copy of "Cujo" and explained to them the movie was about a rabid Saint Bernard. He refrained from giving too much away but told them to imagine if Beethoven contracted rabies and just started mauling children. He mused they would get the idea and played the movie then went into another room connected to the classroom. Phoebe was dismayed. Podcast, the boy sitting next to her, narrated into his boom mike and painted Phoebe as an outcast with a secret rejected by her peers. He speculated she on the run or on the run from herself. He moved the mike to Phoebe. Phoebe clarified her grandfather died and her family came to Summerville to "pick through the rubble of his life," according to her mother. Podcast asked if she was trying to uncover the mystery of his death. She told him he died of was natural causes. Podcast inquired if she was sure it was not murder. Phoebe was pretty sure it was just a heart attack. Podcast remarked it was the silent killer. They introduced themselves and shook hands. Phoebe asked him why people called him "Podcast." He clarified he called himself "Podcast" because he had a podcast. Around the point in the movie when Cujo attacked Karen's car, another earthquake went off in Summerville. Gary went to an instrument and watched it. Phoebe walked in and stared at his research on the wall. She asked what it was. Gary was surprised and informed her there was a highly entertaining movie about a killer dog happening right over in the classroom. Phoebe asked if that was a seismic map on the wall. Gary confirmed it was and asked her how she knew that. She explained she guessed it was a seismic map because it was a map of seismic activity. Before Gary could speak, she asked him if he was a seismologist. He asked her if that seemed hard to believe. Phoebe stated she figured him for a football coach. He was beside himself. Phoebe looked over some papers and noticed the patterns were not tectonic or volcanic. Gary was intrigued and drew out a volcanic and tectonic earthquake. He stated how the volcanic one builds and crests and how the tectonic has a little p-wave followed by a large s-wave. Phoebe stated she knew that and she was not an idiot. Gary agreed then drew out the pattern in Summerville: a large p-wave and a small s-wave like an explosion. Phoebe asked him where it was coming from. Gary admitted he had no idea and revealed he could not triangulate it despite setting up geophones. Phoebe asked if he used three. Gary confirmed he knew how many sides there are in a triangle. Phoebe joked she thought he was being obtuse then she winked. Gary stared at her then asked if that was a geometry joke. Phoebe confirmed it was joke and explained that was why she winked. Gary understood and found it so terrible he loved it. He continued and explained to Phoebe that Summerville was nowhere near a tectonic plate, never had any underground volcanic activity, was near no fault lines, and never had any frakking took place there and added there was not even any loud music yet the town was shaking on a daily basis. They looked at the seismic map. Phoebe speculated it could be the apocalypse. He looked at her. After school, Podcast and Phoebe walked through town. He readied his mike and instructed Phoebe to introduce herself and tell him what she ate for breakfast. Phoebe said her name and "toast." Podcast asked for a little more like a joke or something. Phoebe asked him, "What do you call a dead polar bear?" Podcast had no idea. Phoebe replied, "Anything you want. He can't hear you now." Podcast laughed and took his headphones off then commented that joke was funny and she was funny. Phoebe smiled and agreed it was a pretty hilarious joke. Podcast started telling her "fun facts" about the town and told her Summerville had more dead residents than living ones. Phoebe told him that was how cemeteries worked. He pointed out Wertheimer's Hardware and stated it was run by the Illuminati, which was composed of Lizard people. Phoebe inquired further. Podcast gave her Thomas Jefferson, Einstein, and Beyoncé as some examples then implied the Lizard people built the pyramids. Phoebe guessed it was the slaves. Podcast pointed out the Napier Theater was haunted. Phoebe admitted she did not believe in ghosts. Podcast stopped and turned around in dismay. He asked how she could not believe with all the evidence out there. Phoebe shared her belief that people were just meat puppets. Podcast thought of something she should see and ran off to grab his scooter. They walked to the Shandor Mining Company property. Phoebe noticed the warning signs and asked Podcast if they were allowed to be there. Podcast told her it was totally fine and the mine was closed since the 1940s. He revealed the signs were posted due to hazardous chemical leaks and on account of dynamite. He demonstrated his safety measures, covering his nostril and mouth with his shirt. Podcast told her all about the history of Summerville starting out as a mining operation that bore into a mountain like grapefruit and smelted everything into cold riveted selenium girders. Phoebe wondered how they made a steel beam out of an electric conductor like selenium. Podcast found it weird, too, then continued with his story about how the mine was forced to close down. She asked why. He revealed one by one, miners who had worked for years began leaping down the mine shaft to their death and the incident was called "The Shandorian Curse." Podcast backed up behind a raggedy cloth covering up an entrance and vanished. Phoebe peered in and followed. They looked at carvings against the mountain. Phoebe asked who built it. Podcast revealed that depended on who you believed. He claimed it showed up one day without explanation. Podcast and Phoebe walked along the road to the Farmhouse. She asked him what his podcast was about. Podcast told her it was mostly about mysteries, the unknown, conspiracy theories, and the occasional restaurant review. Phoebe mused she would check it out sometime. Podcast perked up and handed her a My Little Pony flash drive containing his episodes. He believed the show really found its voice in episode 46. He tried to act cool and asked her to be his lab partner. Phoebe suspected they were not going to do any labs but agreed to be his partner. He smiled. Phoebe pointed out she was home. Podcast was surprised she lived at the "Dirt Farmer's" house. Phoebe confirmed that was her grandfather. He seemed concerned and pulled out his camera phone. Phoebe asked him if he was recording her. Podcast informed her he was doing just in case her body was pulled apart into tiny pieces by an unseen dark force. Phoebe was undaunted and told him bye. Phoebe brushed her teeth before going to bed. She knelt down and saw a white knight had moved one square. She moved a pawn to the square between the black pawn and her knight. She watched as a pawn moved forward next to the white knight. She admitted that was different. She advanced her knight and took a pawn. The white knight levitated and knocked her knight off the board. She noticed the P.K.E. Meter was on and registered an entity. She jumped on her bed and faced the meter then tried to communicate. She hopped off the bed and picked up the P.K.E. Meter. She registered a stronger reading. She turned around and the arms on the meter lowered. She waveed it towards her door and it registered again. Her closed bedroom door opened wide. She slowly peeked out into the hall. One by one, the hall lights turned on as she stepped forward. She followed the lights and meter reading downstairs. The meter arms dropped when Phoebe found Callie sleeping at the dining table with a glass of wine. A light turned on behind her. She turned around and the meter registered. The armchair suddenly slid forward and scooped her up then spun around. Phoebe gasped. She checked Callie. Callie's head moved a little but she was still asleep. Phoebe looked down and noticed an odd pattern in the floor. She took a panel off and saw a covering. She slid pieces of floor panel around and soon solved the floor puzzle. She reached into a hidden space and pulled a Trap up. The next day, Gary played "Chucky" for the class. While the other students watched Chucky attacking Karen Barclay, Podcast attempted to pry the Trap open with a wooden ruler. Part of the ruler snapped off. Gary looked up from his comic book and quickly got out of his chair. Gary was impressed with their killer replica. He picked up the Trap and admired it. Podcast agreed. Phoebe asked him what it was a replica of. Gary was shocked at her question. He told them it was a Ghost Trap. They looked at him blankly. He looked at Podcast and wondered how of all people, he knew nothing about it. Podcast stated he was ashamed. Gary admitted he was obsessed was Ghostbusters and equated New York in the 1980s to "The Walking Dead." He looked at every inch of the Trap. Phoebe asked him if it just stopped. Gary recalled there was no ghost sighting in 30 years. A small gray mist seeped out then sucked back in the Trap. Gary dropped the Trap. The Trap cackled. He crouched down and asked them if that was a real Trap. Podcast confirmed it was. Phoebe told him it might be and revealed she found it in her living room. Podcast added she lived on the Dirt Farm. Gary asked that was the really spooky one. Podcast told him it was farm that read "DIRT" on it. Phoebe asked what happened in New York. Gary showed them a recording taken by someone during the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984 and explained the whole city was freaking out and then these physicists showed up in their portable proton accelerators and blew the roof off a Manhattan high rise. Gary soon realized none of it was ringing a bell with them. Phoebe pointed out it was decades before she was born. Podcast believed that all happened. Gary guessed her father never mentioned it. Phoebe stated was only with her mother. Gary commented "cool" then slipped away. Podcast questioned why he said that. Gary wondered if the Trap still worked. Podcast suggested they try to open it. Gary lit up at the thought of that. After school, Gary clamped jumper cables on a school bus engine and on the Trap. He picked up a pair of safety glasses and handed one to Phoebe. She wad amused two millimeters of plastic was considered eye protection. She asked them if what they were doing was safe. Gary stated it was not safe and history was safe. He walked to the driver window of the school bus while Phoebe uncurled the Trap's line. Gary called geometry safe. He declared science was all particle accelerators and hydrogen bombs or giving yourself the plague and gambling on the cure. He handed the other pair of safety glasses to Podcast, who sat on the bus driver's seat. Phoebe placed the trap pedal down between the two school buses then she stood near the open door. She called science reckless. Gary agreed it was reckless, like punk rock, and called safety pins the nipple of academia then told Podcast to fire it up. Podcast started the ignition. The Trap cackled. Gary exhaled and admitted he always wanted to open a Trap. Phoebe took cover behind the door. He pushed the pedal down with his foot. Nothing happened. He stomped the pedal twice more. Nothing happened. He held out his hand to tell Phoebe to stay there. He approached the Trap in anticipation. He tapped the Trap doors. It suddenly opened in a flash. He fell on his back. The spectral form of Vinz Clortho roared then flew towards the Shandor Mining Company property. Phoebe turned away as it passed by, shattering the windows on Gary's car and both buses. Podcast stepped outside and raised his arms in triumph. Gary became uneasy and suggested they leave. Phoebe pointed out he was an adult. Gary noted he was and that made him liable. Gary took the clamps off the Trap then drove Phoebe and Podcast to the Farmhouse. After Podcast blew the Aztec Death Whistle, Callie walked into the study to see what the horrific sound was. Podcast asked if he could keep the whistle. Callie told him to keep it as long as he did not use it again. Gary greeted her. She noted he brought them. Gary stated it was a service he provided, he was also an escort. She reacted. He admitted that came out wrong. She agreed. Gary admitted he always wondered what was inside the Farmhouse. Callie informed him the only thing lurking inside was her slowly dying soul. Gary asked if that was what the smell was. Callie quipped it was not dinner. Phoebe and Podcast stared at them in disbelief. Callie was about to offer something but he quickly accepted. She admitted she had no food. Callie took him on a tour. Podcast turns to Phoebe. He hung out in her bedroom and read a copy of Tobin's Spirit Guide. He suddenly shared his belief that think Gary was trying to bone her mom. Phoebe stared out into space. Podcast asked if that bothered her. Phoebe assured him it did but she exhibited emotions differently that everyone else and she was vomiting on the inside. He turned the page and saw a full page illustration of a standing Terror Dog and a small illustration on the right hand page of a Terror Dog on all fours. He recognized it from the Trap opening. Phoebe came over. They read about the Sumerian land of the dead and its ruler, the might god Gozer, and its protectors, the Gatekeeper and the Keymaster. Phoebe wondered what they let out. Phoebe walked around outside with the P.K.E. Meter. She saw Callie inside laughing. Phoebe followed a reading to a shack. She discovered there was a fire pole inside. She tucked the P.K.E. Meter in the back of her pants and rode the pole down. She called out. Lights started turning on and revealed an underground laboratory. She looked a collection of spores, molds, and fungus in petri dishes and glass jars. She heard a click and went to a locker. She opened it and found several flightsuits. She saw a name patch reading "SPENGLER" on the one. She reached into the left chest pocket and found a crumpled Crunch Bar wrapper then a pair of glasses in the right chest pocket. She placed them in front of her glasses and saw they were about the same size and shape. A screen turned on and surprised her. There was an unfinished Proton Pack on a table. She sat down in front of it. A lamp moved and shone its light at her face then at the pack. She took off the cyclotron lid with her hands, flipped it over, and studied the CRT Emitters inside. She noticed two of them were missing. A drawer shot open. Phoebe thanked Egon. She installed the two emitters, set the lid aside, and took out the mini cyclotron. She wondered how on earth he built such a small cyclotron. The lamp head shone its light on a wall where many framed degrees hung. Phoebe understood he was a genius. She asked for needle nose pliers. The lamp shone on a pair on the table. She grabbed them and continued. That evening, Phoebe ate popcorn while she watched the original Ghostbusters commercial on a laptop in her bedroom. Callie went into Phoebe's bedroom. Phoebe closed her laptop. Callie asked what she was up to. Phoebe claimed she was conducting experiments. Callie thought that was lame and was surprised she found popcorn. Phoebe asked her what kind of scientist her grandfather was. Callie replied the kind that repelled loved ones. Phoebe guessed a physicist. Callie lost interest and was about to leave. She informed Phoebe she was thinking of grabbing dinner with Gary the next day. Phoebe asked who Gary was. Callie informed her that was her teacher's name. Phoebe stated aloud she was going on a date with "Gary Grooberson" to let that sink in with her mother. Callie claimed it was just dinner and told her good night. Phoebe advised her not to be herself. Callie chuckled and left. Phoebe opened up the laptop and wrote down the Ghostbusters' phone number. The next day, Phoebe and Podcast chose the Summerville Foundry for the site of their equipment test. Podcast lined up some glass bottles. Phoebe finished the last touches on the Proton Pack. Podcast welcomed her to Rust City. She asked if the Foundry was where all the raw selenium was processed. Podcast guessed so. Phoebe used the momentum from kicking her right leg up to get the Proton Pack on. Podcast asked her how she fixed it and pointed out she was 12 years old. Phoebe admitted she kind of met her grandfather and he showed her what to do. Podcast wore the Ecto Goggles. He pushed it down over his eyes. He asked if Egon was howling and clanking chains. Phoebe stated that would have been weird then she turned around so the pack faced Podcast. She asked him to switch her on. Podcast looked around then flipped a red switch under the ion arm. The cyclotron churned on. Podcast backed away then walked to Phoebe's right. Podcast and Phoebe nodded to each other. Phoebe reached over and tried to unholster the Particle Thrower. She got it on the second try. Podcast got out his boom mike. Phoebe hit activate and flipped two switches on the right side of the thrower then the barrel extended out. She declared the safety was off. Podcast narrated her feet were planted, her face was poised, and wondered if this would be the moment of her death. She fired at the targets. Podcast cheered. Phoebe stopped and backed up. Podcast declared that was the best thing he ever saw. He snapped a photograph of the wreckage and it printed out from the left side of the goggles. He waved the photograph around. Phoebe asked if she hit it. Podcast pushed the goggles up and declared she destroyed it. He wanted his turn at the pack. They heard a weird sound and looked around. Phoebe asked what that was but Podcast believed it was a pigeon. Phoebe walked to the Foundry to investigate. Podcast grabbed the Trap from the wagon and hurried after her. After they entered the Foundry, the door closed on them. Podcast was eager to come back for his Halloween episode. They saw a bite mark with blue Ectoplasm dripping down and kept going until they heard the sound again. Phoebe looked at Podcast. He shook his head. They kept going and observed a ghost near the ceiling chomping on a pipe. Podcast asked Phoebe if she was just a little freaked out. Phoebe stated overstimulation calmed her. She ran to a big pipe. Podcast took the goggles off and followed her. They made noise. Muncher paused, looked around, then continued munching. Phoebe peeked then ducked. Podcast got out the Aztec Death Whistle and psyched himself. Phoebe asked what the whistle was for. Podcast claimed her had a plan and stood up. Phoebe told him to wait but it was too late. Podcast blew the whistle. Muncher spat metal projectiles at them. After the barrage was over, Phoebe fired at him and hit the overhead piping. She ordered Podcast to get the Trap ready and kept firing. Eventually, she wrangled him in her Proton Stream. Podcast threw the Trap out but it fell on its side. He frantically pulled it back but Muncher broke free and fled the Foundry. Podcast and Phoebe loaded their red wagon with the gear and walked down the dirt road. Trevor happened to encounter them during his first drive with Ecto-1. Phoebe introduced Podcast. Trevor was surprised she had a friend. Phoebe was surprised he had a car. Trevor clarified it was a Cadillac. Podcast stated they needed a ride and asked if he knew how to drive. Phoebe quickly answered he failed his driver's test three times. Trevor told them to get in the back. On the drive to town, Trevor asked them what was going on. Phoebe mentioned the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984 but Trevor claimed he already heard of the Manhattan ghost stories. Phoebe stated the stories were real. Podcast elaborated it meant the Ghostbusters were real, they really saved the world, fought back an invading army of the undead and 100 foot Marshmallow Man. Phoebe believed their grandfather was Egon Spengler, one of the Ghostbusters. The police CB radio picked up a dispatcher telling all units there were reports coming in of some kind of animal taking a bite out of Steve Fletcher's truck. In Summerville, Trevor asked what they were looking for. Podcast stated they were searching for evidence. Trevor took a left, past a stop sign with the "S" missing. Podcast and Phoebe leaned towards the front. They drove past an alley where some trash cans have been munched on, too. There was blue ectoplasm left behind on them. Trevor was starting to lose patience and asked them if what they saw was really a raccoon or a possum. Phoebe saw Muncher eating a fire hydrant. Trevor braked to a stop and was shocked to see a ghost then asked what they should do. Podcast told him it was a Free floating metal muncher and definitely a Class 5. Podcast wanted to get him but thought of taking a photograph first. Podcast tried to get a good position and stopped on a lever that inadvertently triggered the gunner seat that Phoebe was sitting on. She and the seat was moved outside the car. Muncher took off and they gave chase. Podcast went flying backwards after Trevor hit the gas. They caused a lot of property damage along the way. Phoebe shot a theater sign, news stands, store fronts, and the Spinners sign. She finally wrangled Muncher and Podcast deployed the Remote Trap Vehicle. He just about to trap Muncher but they were about to drive head on into a truck. They screamed and Trevor swerved around then dodged traffic. They gathered themselves and took off after Muncher. They managed to trap him before he could reach the mountain on the Shandor Mining Company's property but they approached the bridge. Trevor screamed. Phoebe barely got the gunner seat back inside in time before impact. The side of the exposed door scraped along the bridge, then properly closed after they cleared the bridge. Everyone screamed. Ecto-1 slid into a stop and kicked up a gravel cloud. Podcast surprised Phoebe and hugged her then apologized. Trevor realized they were looking at the same mountain he went to the day before. Evening fell as they drove home. Trevor asked if any of it bothered Phoebe. She asked what he meant. Podcast declared their grandfather was a legend and they could be anything they wanted, like an Influencer or a DJ. Trevor admitted it was easier when he thought Egon was crazy. Phoebe stated he was not. Trevor agreed but wondered why he abandoned their mother. Sheriff Domingo pulled them over. Trevor panicked and thought they were screwed. Podcast suggested they fight. Trevor told them to just open the glove box. There was an unopened Twinkie on top of the papers. Domingo tapped on the driver side window and asked Trevor for his license and registration. Trevor, Phoebe, and Podcast were arrested for several crimes, including driving without a license, an expired registration, speeding, and destroying half of Main Street with a Proton Pack. They were taken to the Summerville County Sheriff's Department where they were placed on a jail cell. Trevor talked to Podcast and Phoebe about what happened to him the day before at the top of the mountain and hearing something say "Gozer." From the jail cell next to theirs, Lucky Domingo stood up from the cot and confirmed Trevor was speaking the truth. Phoebe stood up and asked Sheriff Domingo about her phone call. He asked her who she was gonna call. He sat her down at a desk, placed a desk phone in front of her, and advised her to make it quick, then he walked away. Phoebe waited until the coast is clear then she got out a folded up piece of paper and unfolded it. She dialed the Ghostbusters' original phone number, adjusted her glasses and waited for an answer. The call was routed to Ray's Occult Books in New York City. Ray Stantz answered and stated the store was closed. Phoebe asked him to wait because she got one phone call on account of being in prison. Ray was intrigued. He recounted the time he was in jail and stated he was not a lawyer but he was listening. She asked him if he was "Ray Stantz, the Ghostbuster." Ray saw that as a cue to hang up. She pleaded with him to hang on because she was calling about Egon Spengler. Ray paused then told her Egon Spengler could rot in hell. Phoebe was silent then informed him Egon died last week. Ray's expression changed and he let out a soft exhale. She thought they were friends. Ray told her that was a long time ago. She asked what happened between them. Ray sighed. He admitted when they started the business, busting ghosts was a gas and it helped the economy was good thanks to the Reagan years and that people believed in them. He revealed business got slow and hauntings got thin. He recalled Peter Venkman thought they did their job too well, they could barely keep up their mortgage, and the finale nail was when some actor bought up most of Tribeca, and they lost the Firehouse. He revealed it was now a Starbucks. Ray switched the receiver from his right to left ear. Phoebe asked if they all just walked away after that. Ray switched the receiver back to his right ear. He revealed Peter was a professor emeritus at SUNY Cortland and was teaching advertising and promotion, Winston Zeddemore went into finance and made a fortune, and he continued his bookstore. She asked about Egon. Ray noted his actions did not help prevent the end of the business. He told her they went from ten calls a week to one if they were lucky and Egon started to tell people that their ghost problems were irrelevant because the world was coming to an end. Ray admitted Egon got spooky and freaked him out. He moved the receiver back to his left ear and recounted how he went to the Firehouse one morning and Ecto-1, Egon's Proton Pack, all of the Traps, and 16 ounces of fuel isotope were gone along with Egon. Phoebe pointed out he had to have had a reason for doing that. Ray told her Egon called him up about 10 years later from some small town in Oklahoma rambling an about "the rising storm" and "the huge psychic tornado that was gonna "consume humanity in darkness forever." Ray wanted to believe him but could not. Phoebe tried to explain there was a mountain with ancient carvings but he informed her there were a lot of mountains out there with ancient carvings out there. He advised her against chasing ghosts. She revealed to him Egon was her grandfather. Sheriff Domingo pushed the switch hook's button to hang up and announced her time was up. Callie and Gary arrived at the sheriff's office and Phoebe and Trevor were escorted to the front. Callie asked them what the hell they were thinking. Gary joined in and pointed out they could have really hurt themselves. While Callie's back was to him, Gary's face indicated the opposite and he thought they did something really cool. Gary leaned toward Phoebe and asked in a whisper if she caught anything. Phoebe indicated it was in the Trap. Callie told them they were leaving then reminded him he was supposed to look after Phoebe this summer. Gary was surprised. Callie clarified she was talking to Trevor. Trevor quibbled the incident was Phoebe's idea. Phoebe inquired about their equipment and Ecto-1. Domingo informed her they would remain nice and safe in their impound locker. Phoebe protested and stated they needed all of it. Callie ordered her to come along. Phoebe stated they caught a ghost. Deputy Medjuck snickered and referred to them as the Dirt Farmer's family. Phoebe warned there would be more. Domingo told her she was starting to sound like her lunatic grandfather. Phoebe heard enough, grabbed the Particle Thrower, turned it on, and aimed it at Domingo. Callie stepped in front of her and claimed she did not mean it. Domingo remained calm and asked her if she wanted to spend the night in his jail. Callie forcefully took the thrower away. She held it vertically by the wood grip and handed it to Domingo. Callie ordered Phoebe out again. Phoebe stormed off. Callie called out to Trevor then left the office. Gary pulled up to front of the Farmhouse. Everyone got out. Gary was about to say something but Trevor and Phoebe walked right into the house. Phoebe stared at the inactive P.K.E. Meter in the study. Callie walked in and dumped her purse. She reminded Phoebe they were barely hanging on. Phoebe stated she did not understand. Callie countered she understood they drove around town, destroying expensive property. Phoebe stood up and asked if she ever thought Egon went to Summerville for a reason. Callie revealed she only thought he was a sad old man who turned his back on his family and his partners for a stupid farm in a town nobody cared about and where everyone thought he was nuts. Phoebe thought he was special and loved science like her. She asked her why she never shared that Egon was her grandfather. Phoebe started to tear up. Callie was glad Phoebe found herself but she herself only saw reminders that she did not mean a thing to him and he never cared about her. Phoebe stated he was not nuts. Callie declared he was an asshole and welcomed her to the family. The next day, a meeting was held inside Spinners. Podcast, Phoebe, Trevor, and Lucky occupied one of the booths. Gary's seismic map was unrolled over the table. Trevor asked what exactly was happening with the map. Phoebe quizzed him about the concentric circles around the mountain on the map. Trevor had no idea what they were. Phoebe went with a simpler question and asked if he saw the circles. He nodded. Phoebe stated something was happening inside the old mine owned by the Shandor Mining Company. Trevor thought that was pretty obvious. Podcast revealed he did some digging on the word Trevor heard in the mountain, "Gozer." Trevor questioned what he meant by "digging." Podcast, annoyed, looked at Phoebe. Phoebe explained Gozer was a Sumerian god who once walked amongst the living. Podcast added it was a "soul-eating, flame-dripping deity of evil" and he speculated it wanted to return. Lucky was surprised of all places, it was coming to Summerville. Phoebe asked Lucky what the name "Ivo Shandor" meant to the town. Lucky revealed he built Summerville, the mine, the foundry, the school, and the library, hence his name was on everything. Trevor found that last bit tacky. Phoebe continued and talked about how Shandor created an apartment building in New York made out of selenium girders, mined from Summerville and it was same rooftop of that apartment where their grandfather fought to keep a horde of ghosts from entering the physical plane. Trevor got to the point and asked her what exactly was happening. Phoebe hinted there was only one way to find out. Trevor, Lucky, Phoebe, and Podcast went to the old Shandor mine and rode the mine elevator down the shaft. To break the silence and tension, Phoebe told one of her jokes. She asked what a cigarette and hamster had in common. Lucky had no clue and asked what it was. Phoebe replied they were both harmless until you stick one in your mouth and light it on fire. Podcast snorted and Lucky refrained from laughing and looked away. Trevor commented it was the worst time. Trevor shined his light on the Gozer statue. He asked if that was her. Phoebe informed him that Gozer had no gender. Lucky found that pretty woke for 3000 BC. Trevor warned everyone to watch their steps. He came upon a big hole in the ground. They all looked down it. Podcast believed it was a sacrificial death pit. Phoebe wondered what they were sacrificing. Lucky guessed it was virgins. She teased Trevor and noting tough luck for him. Phoebe recalled that statistically, most 15-year-olds were virgins. Trevor panicked. Lucky realized he was 15 and lied to her about his age when they first met. He quickly changed the subject and asked what all those holes in the wall were. They all looked. Phoebe joked they were "vacancies." Lucky wondered where all the bodies were. Podcast announced he found one. They others joined him at the lone glass tomb. There was an elderly man in a purple suit wearing a twin red sash. Trevor was shocked and asked if he was sleeping. Lucky pointed out it was a coffin. Phoebe climbed up a wooden ladder nearby. Podcast saw the name plate and realized the man in the tomb was the late Ivo Shandor. Phoebe believed Shandor knew Gozer was coming. They looked up at her. She found a series of numerical inscriptions of years including 1821, 1823, 1883, 1908, 1945, 1984, 2021, and 2134. Podcast recalled the Krakatoa eruption in 1883, the most violent volcanic activity in human history. Trevor asked what happened in 1908. Podcast guessed it was probably the Tunguska blast over Siberia. Lucky saw 1945 and begged the question of what did not happen that year. Phoebe saw 1984 and quickly matched it to the Manhattan Crossrip. She likened it to a countdown. Podcast deduced it was like a prophecy. There was a noise. Phoebe climbed down. There is an orange glow coming from the pit. Phoebe leaned over and looked down. A spectral horde was rising up. Trevor called out to Phoebe. There were vague figures and arms in the horde A familiar powering up sound was heard. A proton stream was fired over the pit. It zoomed past Phoebe's left side. Three other proton cannons fired. The streams all crossed then shot into the spectral horde. The mine rumbled. The spirits in the pit visibly reacted to the crossed streams. Trevor shouted to Phoebe. Phoebe realized this was the cause of Summerville's earthquakes. Trevor shouted out to Phoebe again. A voice in the horde said her name, too. A humanoid figure started to form. Trevor pulled Phoebe away. The crossed streams forced the horde back down. The cannons turned off. Phoebe and Trevor stood up Lucky ran over. Lucky asked Trevor if he was okay and brushed the dirt off him. Trevor told her he was fine and asked her the same question. Phoebe walked between them and killed the moment. Trevor asked Phoebe what was wrong. She studied one of the Proton Cannons and declared Egon was right all along. She surmised he built the Proton Cannon array and stood guard, even when no one believed him, sacrificing everything: his life, his friends, and his family. There was a silence. Podcast thought that was a bummer. Trevor and Lucky looked down at him in dismay. Phoebe stated they needed to tell Callie what they discovered. Phoebe looked up from the backseat of the Subaru Outback at the black cloud forming above the Shandor mine. Back at the Farmhouse, Phoebe ran in first and called out to Callie. Callie was sitting on the ripped armchair in the study. Phoebe got no response. Podcast walked inside. Without looking up at them, Callie whispered, "There is no Mom. There is only Zuul." Phoebe and Podcast exchanged looks and slowly stepped toward Callie. Phoebe asked her if she was okay. Callie's eyes were red and she repeated, "There is no Mom. There is only Zuul." She spoke in a demonic voice then she started to breathe quickly. Trevor wanted to know what was happening. Phoebe called to her again. Lucky asked if she was okay. The P.K.E. Meter registered. Phoebe and Podcast leaned in. Podcast got on his knees in front of her. Zuul got in his face and snarled then stroked the left side of his face. She asked him if was the Keymaster. Podcast had no idea. Phoebe was aghast. Podcast asked Phoebe what to do. Phoebe pulled at Zuul. Zuul snarled angrily. The taser setting suddenly activated on the P.K.E. Meter. Zuul quickly took cover behind the armchair and there was another earthquake. Zuul saw the atmospheric disturbance at the mine, snarled, and jumped through a window, shattering the glass. Phoebe yelled for her mother. She took the P.K.E. Meter from Trevor and ran outside. Lucky asked what the hell was going on. Phoebe looked at "Dirt" on the barn. She went on her knees and dug with her hands. She pulled up a black wire. Podcast asked what it was. Phoebe realized the farm was really a trap. Phoebe took them to the underground laboratory. They each grabbed a flightsuit out of the locker. Phoebe presided over a model of the Farmhouse property. She stated it was what Egon was working on all those years. Trevor thought she was talking about the model. Lucky admitted the detail was amazing. Phoebe clarified Egon came to finish what the original Ghostbusters started. Lucky deduced she was alluding to trapping Gozer. Trevor realized that was what the dirt field was for. Phoebe confirmed they were right and pointed out the big silos acted as a capacitor. The model capacitors activated and shorted. Trevor inquired what a capacitor was. Phoebe asked him if it would kill him to read. Trevor quipped if it would kill her just to tell him the answer. Phoebe explained that once activated, the silo towers could hold a charge for one moment but in that one moment, they could power hundreds of Traps. Lucky asked the big question, how were they going to get Gozer into the field. Phoebe steered the conversation to Zuul and Vinz and explained Gozer needed both of them to exist on their plane. Podcast elaborated they both had to possess a human soul each. Trevor caught on that Zuul possessed Callie. Phoebe revealed they would then "unite formally." Trevor was not catching on, nor Lucky. Podcast shared they were thinking at least third base. Lucky cheered on Callie. The children ran into the empty sheriff's office. Podcast and Phoebe searched the evidence room, dumping stuff on the ground. Podcast checked on Phoebe's progress. Phoebe replied she was only finding more stupid guns. Podcast went around a corner and was in awe of finding jail inside a jail. The Remote Trap Vehicle, controller, Proton Pack, and Ecto Goggles were behind bars. Phoebe caught up him and became upset. She explained the cell was secured with an ANSI Class One electromagnetic deadbolt. Podcast reaffirmed he believed in her. She stated it was unpickable. Podcast looked inside and got an idea. He reached for the controller then flipped the red cover on the controller. Phoebe ordered him to wait but it was too late. Muncher was released. Podcast and Phoebe backed up. Muncher immediately bent and ate many of the metal bars, making a sizable hole. He squeezed out of and flew up through the ceiling. One side of the door creaked open. They ran inside. Phoebe pushed the equipment on a cart to the rear of Ecto-1. Trevor handed the equipment to Podcast inside. Lucky separated and left in a squad car while Trevor drove Podcast and Phoebe to the Shandor mine in Ecto-1. For the plan, Phoebe served as the distraction. She approached the temple steps and got Gozer's attention. Phoebe asked, "What do you call a fish with no eyes?" She replied, "A fsh..." Gozer stared at her. Meanwhile, Podcast piloted the Remote Trap Vehicle to the underside of Zuul. Phoebe told Gozer, "There's two whales in a bar." Phoebe imitated a whale sound. She continued her joke, "And then the other one goes: "Go home. You're drunk."" Gozer sat up and stood. The Remote Trap Vehicle drove under Zuul. Phoebe told another joke, "So a grasshopper walks into a bar... and the bartender's like: "We have a drink named after you." Then the grasshopper's like: "You have a drink named Steve?"" Gozer asked Phoebe if she came to offer herself in sacrifice. Phoebe was lost. Gozer asked her if she was prepared to die. Phoebe stated she was not because she was only 12. The Remote Trap Vehicle got into position under Zuul. Phoebe asked Gozer if she was. Gozer was mildly puzzled. Podcast opened the Trap and captured Zuul. Gozer violently reacted and energy shot out of its body. Callie appeared and fell down the stairs. Trevor started up Ecto-1 and the sirens turned on. It slid in with its rear facing the stairs. Gozer dropped to its knees. Podcast and Phoebe headed into Ecto-1 with Callie. Phoebe closed the door and Ecto-1 took off. The Remote Trap Vehicle followed close behind. Phoebe switched on the Particle Thrower as Callie came to and asked what was going on. Phoebe told her it was okay. Podcast informed her she was possessed. Phoebe added she turned into a dog. Podcast added she got kind of "humpy." Callie was only getting more lost. Trevor yelled out for everyone to hold on. They turned at Spinners. Podcast lowered the hatch for the Remote Trap Vehicle. Callie remembered the underground laboratory. Phoebe cut her off and told her she knew about it. Callie recalled seeing computers and equipment. Podcast thought the place was insane. Callie agreed and revealed she sussed out Egon had a plan. Phoebe informed her they were aware. Callie remembered seeing all the photographs of her and realizing Egon was tracking her entire life. Podcast found that rewarding. Phoebe thought it was super but Trevor pointed out they were in the middle of trying to save the world. Callie wanted in. Vinz Clortho made a move for the Remote Trap Vehicle but missed. Podcast steered it to the sidewalk. Callie asked what that was. Trevor replied that was her boyfriend Gary. She took issue with "boyfriend." Vinz chased the Remote Trap Vehicle onto the sidewalk. Phoebe told her the Gatekeeper was in the Trap and her reuniting with the Keymaster was bad. Callie was not catching on. Phoebe put a pin in it, pulled the lever, and moved outside on the gunner chair then she blasted Vinz. Vinz yelped. Phoebe returned inside. Callie was shocked. Phoebe stated she was a scientist. The Remote Trap Vehicle reached the ramp but faltered then finally entered the car. Phoebe continued explaining the plan to Callie. Ecto-1 plowed through some of the Revelation 3:16 signs. Ecto-1 came to a stop by the dirt field. Phoebe exited out of the rear with the Trap holding Zuul. The Psychokinetic atmospheric disturbance was now above the Farmhouse. Phoebe yelled at Callie to follow her then headed to the porch. Callie stopped in front of the porch. The corn field rustled. Callie stood in front of Phoebe and told her to get back. Phoebe protested. Gozer, in a disembodied form pushed the stalks aside and walked out onto the dirt. Phoebe held out the Trap. She told Callie to pull the lever. Callie looked around, saw it, and pulled it. The capacitors surged on. Gozer turned and looked at the capacitor silos. The Traps buried in the field hummed. Lucky kicked the front door open with the Proton Pack on. She fired and wrangled Gozer. Trevor came out of Ecto-1 on the gunner seat but his thrower failed to fire because Mini-Pufts were sabotaging the pack. Phoebe ordered Callie to hit the pedal. Callie stomped the pedal. The red lights on hundreds of buried Traps turned on but the capacitors went offline. Gozer tugged the stream and Lucky went flying forward. Phoebe and Callie ran to Lucky. Vinz blocked Phoebe from Lucky and the pack. Callie and Gozer pulled at the Trap. Gozer wrested it away and Callie fell over. Gozer ripped the Trap in two. Lucky was possessed by Zuul and transmogrified. Gozer was restored to full power. Gozer's fingertips energized and she aimed at Callie and Phoebe. Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, and Winston Zeddemore stepped out in their flight suits and had Proton Packs. After exchanging words, they fired and hit Gozer then crossed their streams. Gozer clutched at the streams. Callie cheered. The Ghostbusters knew it was not over. Gozer uncrossed the streams then whipped them. The momentum launched the Ghostbusters into the air. They bounced hard off the side of Ecto-1. Phoebe asked if they were dead. Peter stalled. Gozer was shot in the back the head. It turned its head. Phoebe has the Proton Pack on. They fired at each other. The streams of energy collided. Phoebe started to lose ground and was pushed backwards. Suddenly, an ethereal hand held the thrower with Phoebe and kept it steady. Egon's ghost had fully manifested Egon and Phoebe exchanged looks. She was in total shock. Ray, Peter, and Winston blasted Gozer, too. Phoebe and Egon inched their way to the Ghostbusters. Podcast destroyed the Mini-Pufts and got the pack working again. Trevor fired at the capacitors. The Traps hummed back on. Callie ran up to the porch and stomped the pedal. The Traps pulled in the ghost wisps, the disturbance, Gozer, Zuul, and Vinz. The Ghostbusters and Phoebe switched off their throwers. Phoebe ran off to check the field. Phoebe went on her knees and slowly moved a finger towards a Trap. Her finger was zapped. Callie grabbed Phoebe and hugged her very tightly. She told Callie she could not breathe. Peter came over to them and went down on one knee. He introduced himself and shook Phoebe's hand, thanking her for pitching in. Phoebe replied he was welcome. Peter liked her style and acknowledged Callie. Callie stated she was "Callie Spengler." Peter called Spengler a weird name and advised her to make the best of that. Trevor greeted Egon. Egon placed his left hand on Trevor's right shoulder. They turned to Phoebe. Egon knelt down and parted her hair. She teared up. Egon turned to Callie. He stood up. She walked over. They looked at each other. Callie ran up and hugged him. He was relieved and hugged her back. Trevor placed his left hand on Phoebe's left shoulder. Lucky placed her left hand on Trevor's right shoulder. Egon peacefully dispersed upwards and they all looked up into the sky.

    Before Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

On March 29, 2022, Phoebe received a Science Fair Award in recognition of a successful and outstanding science project.[Note 2] In 2023, Phoebe, Callie, Gary, and Trevor relocated to New York and became a new team of Ghostbusters. On March 29, 2023, Phoebe received a Certificate of Achievement.[Note 3]

Phoebe is an awkward nerdy girl with some autistic traits. She has a dry sense of humor and reacts to new things and exhibits her emotions differently than others. She is also calmed by overstimulation.

On January 17, 2019, it was reported one of the new leads was a 12 year old girl. The girl is an "insanely smart kid," has a hard time with "interpreting and expressing emotions and speaks with a flat delivery that make her observations humorous", wants to connect with others, struggles with interpreting how her family and friends feel, has difficulty sharing her own feelings, and her science acumen is said to prove invaluable.

On January 26, 2019, Audition videos for 12 year old actress Sarah Abbott and a transcript surfaced.

On March 12, 2019, it was reported Finn Wolfhard's role would be "TEEN BOY (Male/15/Lead) – He is fifteen, but tells people he's seventeen. He's passionate about auto-mechanics. he's often trying to help his little sister (GIRL) navigate the world as she struggles with traditional friendships. His family moves to town and he's immediately smitten with TEEN GIRL."

On March 29, 2019,Jason Reitman confirmed Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard will portray the new family in the movie.

On June 8, 2019, Jason Reitman first shared an anecdote about the genesis of the story: the character, reported in the past as a 12 year old girl, popped into his head wearing a Proton Pack and the story formed in his head for many years, later into a family. He then reached out to Gil Kenan and they started writing the movie.

On June 21, 2019, Mckenna Grace commented on her casting and revealed she learned of it during a Skype session with Jason Reitman.

    Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trivia

•During auditions, Mckenna Grace initially played Phoebe more robotic and flat, going off the character side notes, but Jason Reitman asked her to put "more Mckenna in Phoebe" so she would be more expressive and have more emotions. In the first movie, Peter gave a Crunch bar to Egon after their encounter with the Library ghost. •Jason Reitman's original idea for Phoebe entailed a girl was in a corn field. She fired her Particle Thrower into the corn and it popped into popcorn. The popcorn flies up in the air, the girl catches it and eats it then smiles. The scene was filmed but it couldn't be quite pulled off so it was cut out of the movie. There was an attempt to adapt the idea into a scene but it couldn't be pulled off and the scene was deleted. •Phoebe watches "Old Ghostbusters Ad (1984)" on a laptop in her bedroom. It is the commercial from the first movie. •However, based on text overlay, the version used was not the one in the first movie. It is a fan-edit of the commercial uploaded by "Core" on June 9, 2017.
