Will encounters a 10-year-old boy burying his father, killed in a covered-wagon attack. Dunsten's men ride up and shoot it out with Will, who uses the man's grave for cover. Taking the boy, Robbie, with him to the town of Durango, an attempt is made by Will to start fresh. He calls himself Dan Tomlinson and finds a job in a bank.

On his way back to his hometown and girl, Judy, Dan picks up 10-year-old Robbie whose father has been killed.

He finds an orphan boy (Bobby Clark as Robbie) in the process of burying his father and decides to try to find the youngster a place to live.
Later, after Will, now posing as Dan, and Robbie arrive in Durango, a ne'er-do-well tries to steal Will's guns from the wagon and Sheriff Howard notices the damage to the barrels. Suspecting that the newcomer may be using an alias, Howard wires a description of him to Ranger headquarters.
