Gunsmoke is set in and around Dodge City, Kansas, in the post-Civil War era and centers on United States Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) as he enforces law and order in the city.
"Dirt" was the 25th episode of Season 3 of Gunsmoke, also the 103rd overall episode of the series. Directed by Ted Post, the episode, prepared for TV as a screenplay by Sam Peckinpah, from an original story which was written by John Meston, was originally broadcast on CBS-TV on March 1, 1958.
