This area of Texas rises at the Balcones Escarpment and spreads west across the Edwards Plateau. It has an abundance of rivers, streams and creeks, as well as natural and man-made lakes.

It was great getting into the Texas hills and experience the sometimes rugged terrain. Seeing riders on horseback on the trails was a real throw-back for a guy who grew up in New Jersey. All-in-all, I visited Hill Country State Natural Area on 4 different trips including a weekend backpacking trip.
Beautiful Texas madrone trees, with their distinctive smooth, reddish bark, occur throughout the canyon. The ranch has several miles of self-guided walking and equestrian trails. Guided birding tours with a wildlife biologist, overnight accommodations and catch-and-release fishing are also available. (210) 845-7350.
