     maxlength only limits the length of user input in an element. If you set the contents of an element from Javascript, the browser assumes you know what you're doing and lets you ignore the limit.

     If you want to round a floating-point number to a specific number of digits, use Number.toPrecision():

     An input field's value is stored as plain text, therefore you cannot include HTML (i.e. a link) and expect the HTML to be parsed and functioning.

     You could simulate this behavior with JavaScript, however I would recommend against it. (You would add a click listener, your function would pull the value of the field, see if it is a valid URL, and then open up the location.)

     I'm not going to write the code for this because it would be a terrible user experience. The standard behavior for an input field is that you click on it to edit the text. This is an assumption your users have, and they would therefore (a) not think to click on it because they don't expect it to be a link, and (b) click in it if they wanted to edit the text, only to be redirected and unable to edit the text.

     Alternatively, you could add a small button next to the input, i.e. 'Open' or 'Test' or an external link icon.

     You are trying to set the innerHTML of the element on the current window and not the new window, displayText does not exist on the first window, change document to:

     Put the image into the span, for example using background-image, then give it a relative position and move it to the left so it overlaps the right end of the search box, for example:

     Your eyes are deceiving you. The button is not within the text box. Using a background image is NOT the way to go, as it wont provide the clickable submit button.

     What you need to do is add a wrapper div around the input:text and input:submit.

     The wrapper will look like it's a text box, but will actually contain a transparent text box and a submit button. You'll need to specifically remove the styles for the input:text and input:submit elements.

     It's very important that you keep the submit button, otherwise hitting enter while searching will not have a default reaction. Additionally placing the submit button after the text field allows people to actually click on the button.

     You can make your own magnifying image, they're pretty easy to make in a 20x20px transparent png.

     If you view the page in Google Chrome, right-click on the search button and select “Inspect element”, you’ll be able to see the CSS used to achieve this effect.

   May 26, 2010 · You can, with JQuery.validate () (or other), add some client-side validation rules that handle currency. That would allow you to have the '$' inside the input field. But you still have to do server-side validation for security and that puts you back in the position of having to remove the '$'.
