     While it is possible to write a language implementation in assembly, for most languages it is not really advisable to do so for a variety of reasons: assembly code is notoriously difficult to develop and maintain, and it is by definition not portable.

     That said, some languages are significantly easier to produce implementations for:

     • It is very easy to produce an assembly implementation for Brainfuck
     • Forth has a number of implementations in assembly, which is why it is used in the firmware of several non-PC workstations. You can find some assembly implementations for various platforms here.
     • Many BASIC interpretters have been written in assembly - in fact that was probably true for most BASIC implementations in the various home computers of the late '70s and early '80s. Some can be found here.

     Since there isn't a specific question I'll just offer some general advice on the problem.

     Looks like you're on the right track. Your approach is correct you need to walk your syntax tree and check each subexpression, failing if your types don't match.

     At the toplevel you'll apply your expression level checker across all expressions and then and all the results together to get whether your program as a whole typechecks.

     If your types are all declared up front and the TypeEnv is not altered as a result of traveresing the AST then this approach will work. If you are building up definitions as you walk the tree then consider wrapping your typechecker in a State monad.

     Depending on your frontend language you'll need to decide whether to add explicit type declarations ( i.e. int a) for variables or whether you'll try and deduce them from context of the program, which is a separate task called type inference. If you have explicit declarations from the user then you can simply mechanically check the given types against the uses of the variable and determine if they match. Your types are all simple monotypes so this is easy as you can attach (derving Eq) to your Type and get type comparison.

     Another case to consider is error reporting, with your given AST there is no position information attached so if you walk the tree and fail midways you'll have no way to tell the user what failed and where. If you're parsing the frontend language from a parser like Parsec you can tag each data type (Expr Pos) with the information when constructing the syntax tree.

     For ease of use you might look into a generics library like Uniplate which will let you apply functions and traverse your AST without so much boilerplate. A contrived example to extract all nodes of a specific type might be:

     Declarative is the way forward.

     Imperative describes the actual UI steps you have to take as a user, rather than the results you're trying to achieve. If you write your scenarios this way they'll become really brittle and impossible to maintain. Imagine if someone put a confirmation box in that imperative scenario, and there were 80 similar scenarios which also required changing.

     With declarative steps you only need to change it in the one place where the step is defined; that same declarative step is then reused for all the scenarios which need it.

     I came across few of such developers, Anish Mangal and Gonzalo Odiard, two of them whose contributions are significant for Sugar. I took up the task of creating WikipediaHI using Wikipedia dump for Hindi available for free. I followed the steps specified on this page[ hosted by Gonzalo] for creating Wikipedia activity in your own language.
