Interlaken is located at 566 m (1,857 ft) above sea level, between Lake Brienz to the east and Lake Thun to the west on the alluvial land called Bödeli. The town takes its name from its geographical position between the lakes (in Latin inter lacus).
- Harder Kulm. Interlaken’s own mountain can be ascended in little more than ten minutes via a funicular. In that short space of time you’ll climb more than 730 metres in a car with large windows showing the full beauty of the mountainous landscapes.
- Schynige Platte. Wilderswil on the southern fringe of Interlaken is the northern terminus for a 115-year-old rack railway that winds into the Bernese Alps.
- Lake Brienz. Lake Brienz to the east of Interlaken has a turquoise tone and mountain views. Steamboats have been chugging across this lake since the 1830s and there’s now a small armada of five vessels from the first decades of the 20th century.
- Lake Thun. In the west is Lake Thun, which has a deep blue colour and catches the prevailing breeze. So no wonder this lake is favoured by windsurfers and sailors, while the shore, enveloped by woodland, is dotted with bathing areas to entice you in summer.

- Harder Kulm. After making the journey to Interlaken, stretch your legs out on the Harder—a 1,322-meter mountain that overlooks the resort town and its sparkling lakes.
- Höhematte Park & the Höheweg. An area of 14 hectares in the heart of Interlaken that belonged to the Augustinian convent was acquired in 1860 by a group of 37 hotel owners and private citizens to be left as an open space, a remarkable example of farseeing town planning.
- Hike the Schynige Platte Trails. From Wilderswil, a five-minute walk from the Interlaken Ost railway station, you can take a rack-railroad that has been carrying sightseers up to the Schynige Platte—a mountain flank that gets its name from its reflective wall of slate—since it opened in 1893.
- Cross the Panoramabrücke Sigriswil (Sigriswil Panorama Bridge) The view down into the Gummischlucht gorge, 182 meters (600 feet) below, as you cross the new suspension footbridge is one you won't forget.
