At the time of its release, we were still reeling from the effects of 9.11. Curtis addresses this feeling right there in the opening shots (nicely bookending the whole thing that’s a complete fantasy with video-shot scenes at airports with non-actors) and Hugh Grant’s wonderful opening narration.
I thought the movie was bad, but it seems people are going after the characters, and that's unfair. Hugh Grant appears to actually be in love, at first sight no less. In a movie about love, it doesn't matter that he's her boss. Societal disapproval over power dynamics is not conducive to messages about true love.
