The Drop is a 2014 American crime film directed by Michaël R. Roskam and written by Dennis Lehane, based on his 2009 short story "Animal Rescue". It follows Bob Saginowski, a barman who becomes entangled in an investigation after the mafia-run bar where he works is robbed.
Good movie. I watched the ending monologue twice and I still don’t quite understand why Marv and Bob killed Whelan rather than just ripping him off or something. Or is the point they killed that guy and probably others over tiny shit?

Another fun one: at the start of the movie cousin Marv berates the patrons for not letting go of Richie Whelan’s death. However, his motivation for orchestrating the robbery is to pay for his father’s life support. As his sister says, “he’s dead” - presumably brain dead with no chance of recovery.
