I guess it's supposed to mean like, "violence won't solve our problems (since Die-Hardman used to be a soldier), so you better start building bridges, not ruining them". The "Her words, not mine" was probably supposed to convince him more of what Sam said, since we know Die-Hardman really respected/loved Bridget.
