May 11, 2011 · Hesher attempts to subvert this friendship. He's just plain mean. Portman's character is the most straightforward in the film; she is who she seems to be. Rainn Wilson and Piper Laurie are good actors, and so for that matter is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and here we can see what good actors do with inexplicable situations and undefined characters.
Good acting, good soundtrack. It felt as if the devil sent an Angel. I think the movie is a really well done piece on the psychology of dealing with loss and my theory is hesher is TJ’s imagination/anger and way of coping his moms death. 14 votes, 16 comments.

Indie movie stereotypes out the ass: -LA is dusty and orange. -pretty girl is broke. -Rainn Wilson. -Sad Kid. -Old Lady. -New destructive force. -overcoming themes of death, addiction and family, bringing an unlikely character in as a family member. -nothing made any of the characters other than Hesher valuable to me as a viewer.
May 13, 2011 · Though a lot of the time Hesher feels as aimless, tiresome and unmotivated as, well, an actual hesher, there are some standout moments in the film.All these great moments come solely from Gordon-Levitt, whenever his raucous character attempts to deliver some twisted sage advice to young T.J. about the nature of life.
