The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria are intended to be an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction. Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered species are considered to be threatened with extinction. The IUCN Red List will be updated with thousands of new species assessments and reassessments on Monday 11 December 2023.
As of July 2017, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed 1,000 critically endangered fish species, including 87 which are tagged as possibly extinct. Of all evaluated fish species, 3.0% are listed as critically endangered. The IUCN also lists four fish subspecies as critically endangered.
