James Wolfe (2 January 1727 – 13 September 1759) was a British Army officer known for his training reforms and, as a major general, remembered chiefly for his victory in 1759 over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Quebec.
Already renowned for bold leadership, Wolfe’s death at the very moment of victory at Quebec cemented his heroic status on both sides of the Atlantic. Epic paintings of Wolfe’s dying moments transformed him into an icon of patriotic self-sacrifice, and a role model for Horatio Nelson.
Burial and Abbey Memorial. His body was brought back to England with military honours and at his mother's request James was buried with his father at St Alfege's church in Greenwich.
