The Beginnings: The Ranger name started as a trim package on the full size F-Series trucks. Ford had been importing the Ford Courier since 1972 as a compact pick up. The Courier was produced by Mazda and at the time Ford owned a 7% stake in Mazda (Ford acquired a 24.5% stake in 1979). Ford introduced the Ranger as the replacement for the Courier.
The 2.5 was a stroked (by 7 mm) version of the 2.3 OHC Ford Ranger engine. It also used higher-flow cylinder heads for better intake and combustion. Feb 6, 2007 · I started typing this and then found this on Wikipedia: The 2.3 Lima engine was always OHC and was introduced in 1974, based largely on the German-designed 2.0. It has a 96.0 mm (3.78 in) bore and 79.5 mm (3.13 in) stroke. This version lasted until 1997 in various guises.

When Ford introduced the F-150, it quickly took over the F-100’s sales, making the two pickup trucks redundant. Anyone who wanted an F-100 was happy to upgrade to the F-150.
