The 29 is a completely different rifle inside from the later 29A / 29B. The 29 was a StdVel ammo only rifle when introd. Later in production Savage modified the bolt to upgrade it to 'High Speed (ammo). But most people still use them with StdVel stuff.

Every other 22 pump Savage made except this model locked in the back. In the 29 A and B they went back to that method. Other models they made were the 1903 (Clip mag) 1909 (clip mag), 1914, 25 and then the 29's.

Jan 18, 2017 · Bob had many old long guns that had come down to him through the generations and a couple that he had bought in the 30's. One was a Colt Woodsman prewar and this Savage Model 29. I shipped the Colt for him to his nephew out west (sure would like to have fired it). The rest, about 12, were going to auction.
