John Alexander Thain (born May 26, 1955) is an American financial executive and investment banker. He was president and co-COO of Goldman Sachs, and then CEO of the New York Stock Exchange. Thain then became the last chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch & Co. before its merger with Bank of America.

He went to MIT and got an engineering degree in 1973. After that he went to Harvard Business School and got his MBA in 1979. He then joined Goldman Sachs and rose up through the ranks to become president and chief operating officer during a very successful time for both him and Goldman Sachs. In 2004 he joined the New York Stock Exchange.

Mr. Thain had been president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. since July 2003 and was previously president and co-chief operating officer from May 1999 through June 2003; he had been a director since 1998.
