May 21, 2008 · Judah ben Samuel Halevi (c. 1075–1141) was the premier Hebrew poet of his generation in medieval Spain. Over the course of some fifty years, from the end of the 11 th century to the middle of the 12 th , he wrote nearly 800 poems, both secular and religious.
Although little is known of his life before the pilgrimage, we can trace his journey in detail thanks to letters preserved in the Cairo Geniza. More importantly, we can follow Halevi’s inner religious journey through the stirring poems that he composed in anticipation of and during the voyage.

Halevi’s work covers common subjects in Spanish Hebrew poetry using forms and artistic patterns of secular and religious poetry. Some formats include the zajal, the muwashshah, and poems utilizing internal rhyme, classical monorhyme patterns and the recently invented strophic patterns.
