KDNL-TV started broadcasting on June 8, 1969 as the first UHF television station in the St. Louis market. It was St. Louis’ second independent station until 1986. The station was owned by Evans Broadcasting.
KDNL-TV originally signed on the air on June 8, 1969 as the first new station in the St. Louis market since KPLR-TV launched in 1959, and the first on the UHF band since KTVI (then on channel 54, now on channel 2) relocated to a VHF frequency in 1957.

The acquisition of the Fox Network affiliate was from Cox Enterprises, Inc., of Atlanta, Georgia.
