On May 5, 2023, CBS announced that it would exercise that right and KMAX would cease airing the network's programming on September 1 and revert to an independent station. That June, KMAX began using an interim logo featuring the KMAX callsign in a box, similar to the logos of CBS O&Os such as KPIX-TV and KDKA-TV.
