I’ve written quite a bit about Lee Meriwether the last couple of years and have been honored to interview her a couple times, most recently hosting her panel at East Coast Comicon in April. Below is a tribute I wrote a couple years ago about her brief but resonant time as Catwoman in the 1966 movie.
Lee Meriwether – movie promotion. Before playing the role she was best known for being Miss America of 1955, the Batman Movie was really her first major on screen performance. After her appearance as Catwoman she had great success playing Doctor Anne MacGregor in the sci-fi series “The Time Tunnel”.
Lee Meriwether is an American actress who portrayed the Catwoman in the 1966 movie. Though she did not play Catwoman in the tv series, she appeared in the episodes King Tut's Coup and Batman's Waterloo as Lisa Carson, a woman kidnapped to be the unwilling bride of King Tut.
The role earned her two Golden Globe Award nominations in 1975 and 1976, and an Emmy Award nomination in 1977. She is also known for her portrayal of Catwoman, replacing Julie Newmar in the film version of Batman (1966), and for a co-starring role on the science fiction series The Time Tunnel.
Contrary to popular belief, she never played Catwoman on the series Batman (1966). Only Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt did. She did, however, play Catwoman in the movie Batman: The Movie (1966) and later played another character in two episodes of the series. Classmate of Bill Bixby.
